Pointing

Expert repointing that seals out the weather

Worn and crumbling mortar raked out and repointed on ridges, verges, chimneys and walls to keep water out.

Overview

Pointing with GAC Roofline

Mortar is designed to be the sacrificial part of a roof or wall. Over the years wind, rain and frost gradually wear it away until it becomes sandy, cracked or falls out altogether. Once that happens, water can get in behind ridge tiles, verges and brickwork, leading to damp, frost damage and loose tiles.

Our pointing service carefully rakes out the old, failing mortar to a proper depth and replaces it with a fresh, well-compacted mix matched to your property. We repoint ridge and hip tiles, gable verges, chimney stacks, parapet walls and general brickwork.

On older and period properties we can use lime-based mortars, which allow walls to breathe and move naturally. We always aim to match the colour and finish of the existing work so repairs blend in.

FAQs

Pointing FAQs

Straight answers to the questions we're asked most often. Can't find what you're looking for? Just give us a call.

How long does repointing last?

Properly executed pointing typically lasts many years. Exposure, the mortar used and the quality of the original brickwork all make a difference.

Should ridge tiles be repointed or replaced with dry ridge?

Both are valid. Repointing suits many roofs and keeps a traditional look, while dry ridge needs less maintenance. We'll talk you through the options.

Can you repoint in winter?

Mortar should not be laid in freezing conditions, so we schedule pointing for suitable weather to ensure it cures correctly.

Do you use lime mortar?

Yes, on older buildings where it's appropriate. Using cement mortar on a lime-built property can trap moisture and damage the brickwork.
